Harper & Keele Vet School | Case Study Harper & Keele Vet School | Case Study

Client

Harper & Keele Vet School launched in 2020.  It aims to attract innovative and dedicated students from the widest range of backgrounds.

Lorien Waterer, has contacted The Coaching Academy to discuss providing an internal coaching training programme for up to 11 members of the Preceptor Team at Harper & Keele Vet School.

Business Need

The senior leadership team at Harper & Keele Veterinary School wanted a solid foundation and high-level coaching skills training to adopt a coaching approach within the senior lecturing team.  The team also wanted to ensure the programme was professionally recognised and accredited and that the Preceptor team had the skills necessary for an effective coaching approach with students through their clinical years and beyond during the transition to independent, autonomous, lifelong learning as Veterinary professionals.

The long-term outcome is to develop a coaching approach in the profession’s culture during higher education.

Solution

We proposed our Leader as a Coach module Programme.   This programme consists of six core training modules and four 90-minute facilitated action learning booster sessions.   The sessions explore how to embed a true coaching approach to leadership at all levels.   It covers different coaching models to use and how to adapt their use in different situations.   There is a huge practical element to this programme to ensure participants know how to adopt coaching conversations with colleagues and peers with transformational effect.

  • Pre-training design meetings between our Head of Training, Sharon Lawton, Head of School Faculty Mike Cathcart and Senior Lecturer Lorien Waterer. This was vital to understand the client’s vision and understand the overall outcomes for success to ensure the training is directly relevant to the team’s needs and expectations.
  • In-Person Training Progamme: A fully tailored, programme was delivered on-site for the Preceptor team. We aimed to ensure that all participants could foster a coaching approach with lots of time allocated for discussion and practicing a coaching approach.   The programme also included, at the request of the client, The DISC Personality Model of Human Behaviour, to support a positive working environment by appreciating and valuing individual differences and enhancing team performance and overall productivity.   The session was linked directly to what being a high-performance team meant, with plenty of discussion time and action planning.
  • Recognised Accreditation:  It was important to align with the veterinary industry's professional excellence.  Therefore, the client requested a professional coaching credential.   This programme allowed each of the participants to achieve an Accredited Award in Coach Training (AACT) with The Association for Coaching.   This also included 1 year of membership with The Association for Coaching.
  • We provided a multi-layered learning experience, including workbooks, handouts, and interactive team activities specifically designed for this organisation.
  • A Group Dynamics Report for the Harper & Keele Veterinary School Preceptor team was also supplied.
  • Post-training review and evaluation were included within the package to gauge return on investment.

“As a trained coach prior to my role at Harper & Keele Vet School, I needed a coach training company that met our industry’s high standards. The Coaching Academy team demonstrated adaptability and commitment to excellence, taking time to understand our vision and tailor the programme to our needs.

Training alongside the entire team helped us build a shared mental model and develop coaching skills relevant to our roles, ensuring consistent support for our students and preceptor team.

The professionalism, relevance to veterinary education, and variety of coaching tools provided numerous ways to foster a coaching culture within our team and the wider school. The support during design and implementation was outstanding, and the well-structured training offered valuable practical and theoretical learning.

Our team rated the return on investment as very high, and I’m excited to see the positive impact coaching will have on our students.”
